Best time to post on Facebook Marketplace: a car rep’s guide

There’s no proven best time to post on Facebook Marketplace. Facebook doesn’t publish one, and the popular “Thursday to Sunday, 6 to 9 p.m.” tip has no data behind it. For a car sales rep, the best time is when you can reply within minutes, with a few new vehicles every day.

This post is for reps posting their dealership’s vehicles from their own profile. It covers what Facebook says about new listings and a simple daily routine. It also covers the weeks when buyers have the most money to spend.

The short version

If you only read one thing
  • No hour has been proven to sell more cars. Every “best time” online measures something else: Page posts, dealer websites, or nothing at all.
  • Post a few vehicles every day you work. Facebook says it can show listings based on how recently they were posted, and a new listing is only new for a short while.
  • Post when you can reply fast. The start of your shift works for most reps, because the messages arrive while you’re at the store.
  • Have your whole lot up before tax refunds land. That’s February and March in the US, and March to May in Canada.

The hard part isn’t picking the hour. It’s finding time to post every day, and OpenList speeds that up. It brings your dealership’s vehicles in from its website and fills in Marketplace’s form, and you press Publish.

Is there a best time to post on Facebook Marketplace?

Not one that’s been proven for car listings. Facebook doesn’t publish when Marketplace buyers browse, so every time slot you see online is a best guess.

The most common tip is Thursday to Sunday, 6 to 9 p.m., but the pages that repeat it show no data behind it. Social media studies point somewhere else. Sprout Social’s 2026 study of brand Facebook posts found Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m., did best.

That measures people liking posts, though, not people shopping for cars. The closest data on car shoppers comes from Cox Automotive. Visits to dealership websites peaked on Fridays around 2 p.m. Eastern, and nine of the 10 slowest days were Sundays.

That’s from 2016, and from dealer websites rather than Marketplace. Still, it’s the strongest data point we found.

What the evidence says

There’s no proven best hour to post. What makes the difference is posting a few vehicles every day and replying within minutes. The rest of this post shows how.

What Facebook says about new listings

Meta publishes a short explainer on how Marketplace picks listings for each buyer. It doesn’t give an hour, but it does say three useful things.

  • Recent listings get shown. Products can appear in a buyer’s feed based on how recently they were listed.
  • It also weighs fit. Signals can include location, category, condition and price, and how the buyer has used Marketplace before.
  • Buyers can sort by newest. Search results can be sorted by date listed or distance, instead of Facebook’s suggested order.

Put together, a new listing gets its best shot at buyers who sort by newest, and it slides down as other sellers post. That’s why posting a few vehicles every day beats posting your whole lot on Monday and nothing after.

How many a day?

Facebook doesn’t publish a daily limit. We recommend 5 to 10 a day from one account, starting at the low end if your account is new. Our complete guide explains why.

A posting routine for reps

Here’s the routine we suggest. It’s built around when you can answer, not around a magic hour.

  1. Start of your shiftPost today’s 5 to 10 vehicles. Messages start coming in while you’re at the store and can book a test drive.
  2. Through the dayAnswer every message within minutes. Turn on notifications for Marketplace messages on your phone.
  3. After workCheck your messages once more. Sprout Social found brand posts got the most engagement from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
  4. Thursday and FridayMake sure your best units are freshly posted. Fridays were the busiest day on dealership websites in Cox Automotive’s 2016 data, just ahead of the weekend.

Skip these times

  • Your day off, unless you’ll answer from home. A buyer who waits a day may have moved on.
  • Saturday night, if your store is closed Sunday. The messages sit until Monday.
  • One big batch a week. Meta’s spam rules cover posting at very high frequency, by hand or automatically.

Why replying fast matters more than when you post

A Marketplace buyer can message the next similar car in one tap. Answering first gives you the best shot at the appointment, and the bar is low.

19% of website leads to dealerships got no personal reply in Pied Piper’s 2025 study. Answering every message already puts you ahead. Pied Piper, 2025

Pied Piper’s study covers dealership website leads, not Marketplace messages, but it shows how often buyers get ignored.

Many first messages are Facebook’s suggested “Is this still available?” Keep a short reply ready: yes, the price, and when they can see it. Then ask a question back, so the chat keeps going.

Fast replies only work if the car is really there. OpenList checks your dealership’s website every day and tells you which vehicles sold and which prices changed. You fix those listings before anyone asks.

Best times of year to post cars

The biggest timing swing isn’t the hour. It’s tax season, when buyers suddenly have a down payment.

1.55M used vehicles sold at retail in the 30 days to March 4, 2024. That was the most since April 2020. Cox Automotive, Mar 2024
3 weeks is how long a US refund usually takes after e-filing. IRS
  • In the US, e-filed refunds arrive about 3 weeks after filing, so many land in February. In 2024, the busiest 30 days for used sales in four years ended in early March. Have your whole lot listed, with real prices, by early February.
  • In Canada, the filing deadline is April 30, and the CRA aims to send refunds within 2 weeks of an online return. We’d expect a similar rush from March to May.

Outside tax season, keep the same daily routine. Steady posting does more over a year than chasing any one week.

Renewing and reposting

Facebook’s help page describes Renew as a way to keep a listing active. Renewing or editing a listing resets the clock on old listings, which Facebook may delete after 2 years without activity. It doesn’t say a renewed listing counts as new.

  • Renew when Facebook offers it for vehicles that are still on the lot.
  • Don’t delete and repost the same car to look new. Meta’s spam rules list repetitive content as a sign of spam.
  • Freshen a quiet listing with better photos, a clearer description or an updated price.
  • Take sold vehicles down the same day.

Common questions

What is the best day to post on Facebook Marketplace?

No day has been proven best for car listings. Sprout Social found weekdays strongest for Facebook posts overall, while Cox Automotive’s 2016 dealer-website data peaked on Fridays. Post a few vehicles every day you work, and make sure your best units are fresh by Thursday or Friday.

What time of day do people shop on Facebook Marketplace?

Facebook doesn’t publish it. Sprout Social’s study of brand posts points to noon to 8 p.m. For a rep, the better rule is to post when you can reply within minutes, which for most is the start of a shift.

Does renewing a listing move it to the top?

Facebook doesn’t say it does. Its help page describes Renew as keeping a listing active. Facebook can show listings based on how recently they were posted, and buyers can sort by newest. Posting new vehicles every day does more than renewing old ones.

Should I post cars on Sunday?

Only if you’ll answer. If your store is closed, a Sunday post’s messages wait until Monday, and some buyers will have moved on. Nine of the 10 slowest days on dealership websites in Cox Automotive’s 2016 data were Sundays, so Saturday morning is the better slot.

How many cars should I post a day?

Facebook doesn’t publish a limit. We recommend 5 to 10 a day from one account, starting at the low end if your account is new to Marketplace. Meta’s spam rules cover posting at very high frequency, so a steady few each day is safer than dozens at once.
